How does one remove oil base paint from a brass finish?

I found some antique brass plates someone had painted fire engine red! I have them just soaking in water and mild soap which is removing some but not much. Thanks! How does one remove oil base paint from a brass finish?
There are chemical paint strippers that will remove the paint without harming the brass. If there is a lot of detail work that needs to be cleaned out then you can use a stiff plastic (not metal) brush to remove the softened paint from the brass plates. Be sure to wear rubber gloves and goggles when handling strippers. How does one remove oil base paint from a brass finish?
Magic eraser n elbow grease
Get some mineral spirits (sold as ';paint thinner';) and soak the brass plates in it. Then rub it off with a clean cloth.. This is the mildest that will dissolve the paint.

There is also a more costly and more aggressive thick liquid called ';Goof off Ultimate Paint Remover'; that can be poured on the paint and left to soften it. Then rub off with a clean cloth.

If either leaves residue in the nooks and crannies scrub with an old toothbrush dipped in the liquid.
Most paint remover liquids (available in paint %26amp; hardware stores) will do that without harming the brass. Brush on, let set as directed, hose off, rinse and clean.

How long will it take for 10 year old oil based paint to dry?

I used some 10 year old paint on a door and it's NOT drying. I'm sure it will but has anyone else had this happen? How long did it take? How long will it take for 10 year old oil based paint to dry?
Depends mostly the Temperature and Humidity. For every 10 degrees the rate of reaction is twice as fast.

About 1 day at 70

so I would guess 2 days at 60

4 days at 50

8 days at 40How long will it take for 10 year old oil based paint to dry?
Since it is 10 years old the solvent probably evaporated long ago, it may never dry properly.

If it is an oil modified alkyd paint it will take a really long time to dry and cooler temperatures will also increase this dry time.

If after 12 hours it does not dry at all you should wipe it off with a rag soaked in mineral spirits. Once you get all the paint off clean the door with mineral spirits.

Then you can buy some new paint and repaint it.

How can you tell if a wall is painted with oil based paint?

I need to paint a wall in a room with latex paint. However some of the other rooms in the house are painted with oil based paint (I know because the latex paint that former owners painted over it is peeling). On the wall I want to paint, is there a way to find out what kind of paint is on it?How can you tell if a wall is painted with oil based paint?
Put some rubbing alcohol on a rag and wipe a small area. If paint comes off then it is water borne, if not, then it's oil. Having said that, you can use a primer like Benjamin Moore's Fresh Start over oil. It will stick wonderfully and allow you to paint latex over. Get it tinted to the color your going with and use it as a first coat.

I know I answered in another category, but hey, points are points. How can you tell if a wall is painted with oil based paint?
usually, oil based paint is a little shinier.

You have 2 choices the way I see it.

1) paint a small piece of the wall with latex paint. Let it dry for a day, then scratch it with your fingernail. If it comes off then the base is oil.

If it is oil, you'll need to paint over the wall with an oil based primer (no need to sand). Be sure to let it dry fully, otherwise it will crack the latex paint that you put on top. Use a high quality primer, benamin moore, sherwin williams... not some cheapo home depot stuff.

Once the primer is dry (the longer you wait the better), paint on top with your latex paint.
The simplest way to test for oil based paint is get a small can of GOOF OFF from Home Base. With a cloth, rub some on the wall in question. If the paint starts to discolor the cloth it is latex paint.

Goof Off will not remove oil based paint.

If you are still uncertain, prime the entire wall with KILZ. You will be able to paint latex over that.
I haven't tried it, but I read this technique - paint a tiny bit of latex paint over the wall in question. Let dry thoroughly. If it scrapes off easily, it was an oil paint underneath.

Good luck!
oil paint has a shiny finish to it, water based doesn't
well latex paints are water-based , oil based paints are alkyd, alkyd (oil based) dry virtually with no brush marks and also tends to yellow with age . with the painting over the oil based paint with the latex when preparing those rooms for paint your gonna have a lot of sanding to do then prime the surface with an alkyd primer, and tehn apply latex finish coats. i would recommend going to Lowes or Home Depot in you area and talking to the paint specialist they have books on painting that would answer all of your questions and tell you step by step how to do it . good luck

hope this helps
I wouldn't worry about figuring out what's on there now. Since you've already had a peeling problem, assume that at the very least you have CHEAP paint on the wall and prime over it. Any decent primer will seal out problems from oil paint or cheap latex and make a good base for your new paint. Since primer's only $11/gallon, don't spend too much time figuring out what's there now. Prime it for now other reason than that's you'll inevitably want to do anyway.

How much do you need to sand on Oil base paint before you can prime and paint with latex?

My front door is wood and was originally painted with oil base paint. The previous home owners painted over it with fresh latex paint when they put the house on the market. but shortly after we moved in it all pealed off . I'd like to paint it again but I'm not sure how much I'm suppose to sand before I prime it.How much do you need to sand on Oil base paint before you can prime and paint with latex?
sand to remove the sheen of the old oil finish and then wipe clean with a tack cloth.

Any chips should be sanded out to eliminate any rough edges.

Also, the improperly applied latex shoul dbe completely removed.

An oil primer over the old oil finish and then the latex will provide better grip into the old oil finish but can be avoided by proper sanding and cleaning.

DO NOT USE KILZ for this. The latex primer provides no benefit here and the oil base version is quick frying which means brittle which means it typically lasts less on front doors - particularly the exterior.

Latex on the exterior is FINE. In fact since oil is not what it used to be - latex will look better longer. Latex WILL adhere to oil if you sand and use a high grade latex.

80 or 100 grit paper will make your door look horrible !!! Use a very fine paper. You are looking to remove the sheen - that is all.

Stripping to bare wood is awesom eif you have the time, space and energy but it isnt required to have a good, long lasting finish here.

I like the fact that the oil is on the bare wood. But for best and long lasting color USE LATEX FINISH on the exterior. (unless we are talking about a bridge where we can stil bust out lead based paint!!)How much do you need to sand on Oil base paint before you can prime and paint with latex?
Sand until the gloss is off and until any loose paint is gone. Then prime and paint.
pritty much down to the door itself (the wood) or intil the glossy like finish is all sanded down or get a chemical called stripper. this chemical should peel that oilbased paint right off. do not use in a plastic bottle this chemical also slowly eats plastic. it may be found at any paint store. this stuff can be dangerous if not used in a proper area such as in a room with no ventalation.
The purpose of sanding is to get the old paint and dirt off so that the primer can adhere properly. Therefore, only sand until the surface is free of most of the paint and it is smooth to the touch (if you can feel bumps that means that paint has clumped up in that area --be sure to smooth that out or it will be visable when you repaint)

It is essential that you primer the area as the door because as you have found out, latex paint doesn't adhere very well on oil painted surfaces.
Use an electric finish sander, and 100 grit paper. Sand it until the sheen is gone and it appears 'flat'. Make sure any shine is gone. Then use a good primer, such as Kilz.
just sand it enough to give it a dull finish. Wipe it down and you're good to go.
Sand all the latex off and buy some enamel paint anything oil base and repaint you dont want to use latex paint outside thats bad news. If all the latex is removed just rough the door up with 100 or 80 grit and paint.
Just sand it until you see the latex gone in most areas. Scuff along the areas that cant be removed or strip it and you then paint over it.
Remove all the new Latex, which should be easy, then Prime the door with Flat oil base Paint- you can then repaint with Oil or latex. High gloss does not look good, so use some Flat mixed in to dull the high gloss a bit.
Sand until all loose paint is off wipe clean I have always gotten good results using Gripper primmer this is a latex bonding primmer which bonds to anything including ceramic tile Home Depot sells it then I would use a good exterior latex semi-gloss

No - save it as a ';work shirt'; for the next time you paint. Mineral spirits and turpentine will eat the natural fibers of the cotton. Is there a way to get oil based paint out if a cotton t-shirt?
You could try using minaral spirits to brake the paint down but you must put it in the washer before it drys again. It may cause your shirt to fade in color
Scissors! Just cut the paint area out. Then it's gone!

Seriously you now have a new painting shirt. Just make sure to use it as to not ruin any others.
If it was me I's go to a paint store and they would be able to tell you what you could get the paint out with.

Depending on the surroundings (plants, grass, shrubs ect.) you can use Muratic Acid, but depending upon amount of paint, and how far into the concrete it seeped, may not remove all of it. How can I remove old oil based paint from my bathroom counter top and some scratches?

The counter tops have old, exterior, oil-based paint from the previous owner and want to remove it without damaging the surface.

In addition, it has grooves, scratches and small chip on the surface. Chan these issues be address in a way that is cosmetically acceptable and cost effective? How can I remove old oil based paint from my bathroom counter top and some scratches?
Removing this old paint is possible with any paint stripper, but be prepared for a lot of work. You can paint over the old paint with epoxy paint. This type of paint is very thick and will also fill in old scars and scratches. Don't spill or make a mess with epoxy based paint for it is quite a cleanup job. Just use Goof Off. Not Goo Gone, but Goof Off- it's stronger and won't damage the surface. Just be gentle. Mineral Spirits works well too.

Is it possible to remove an oil paint stain from a rug? if so, how?

Save yourself a lot of trouble and hide the stain with a rug. (The size and type depending on the area of the room the stain is located.)

I tried everything anyone recommended and I never could remove the stain completely. But hey, maybe you have a different type of fiber in your carpet than I have, so by all means, try and remove the stain. Meanwhile, throw a rug over it!

My best to you!Is it possible to remove an oil paint stain from a rug? if so, how?
For any oil-based stain on a rug or carpet, the quicker you get to it, the easier it will be to get up. If the spill consists of only a drop or two, pour a small amount of rubbing alcohol onto a white cloth or paper towel and blot -- do not rub -- the oil from the outside of the stain toward the center. If you have a larger spill, use a dry-cleaning solvent. Pour it onto a paper towel and blot, also from the outside of the stain toward the center.

To remove all of the oil, you may have to repeat the cleaning process several times and perhaps over several days, because the oil may wick up through the carpet fibers after the initial cleaning. If the spill is large, the oil will probably soak into the padding beneath the carpet; in that case, you may need to call a professional. Is it possible to remove an oil paint stain from a rug? if so, how?
I WOULD TRY TO DAB ON A PAINT THINNER OR TURPENTINE, BUT MAKE SURE YOU ARE IN A WELL VENTELATED AREA. THAT DOESNT SEEM TO RUIN RAGS WHEN YOU CLEAN WITH THEM. THEN TRY TO CLEAN WITH SOAPY WATER WHEN THE AREA DRIES.

Want to oil paint bright colours but don't turn up as bright as i want. What's the trick plzzzzzz?

if you want the greatest intensity in a color then you have to use the purest pigment of the color without mixing it with any other color. mixing a color dilutes its intensity. using the pure paint from the tube is one way to do this. another is to buy the paint pigments and mix it with your medium and use this. with this method you can control the amount of pigment in the paint thus achieving the proper intensity that you desire.Want to oil paint bright colours but don't turn up as bright as i want. What's the trick plzzzzzz?
Various tricks possible. Instead of white spirits, use turpentine to thin your paints. Apply your oil colours in thin glazes, and this can bring wonderful luminosity to them, as the colours underneath come through. Use 'pure' colours, very clean brushes, and study your colour wheel to find the contrasts to bring the brighter colours out more.Want to oil paint bright colours but don't turn up as bright as i want. Hi,

I don't know if you're referring to the paint itself, or if you want to make a painting where a certain colour will seem to glow, like for insteance giving the impression of a light.

In the case of the second one you have to bear in mind that a colour will look according to the ones surrounding.

A yellow may seem a bright light when surrounded by dark colours, but it sure won't if it's surrounded by white.

Go to museums, grab a book with paintings from old masters and study their works.

Painting is learning to see. Go ahead and learn :-)

Yeah, changing your ground may help. Also if you're thinning with linseed oil it causes yellowing over time. The quality of your oil paint may also be effecting your results. If your using a drying medium (such as liquin) they can darken your colours upon drying.

    Hope that helps.

  • How do you remove oil enamel paint from wood?

I had a 'portable closet' made of wood that I painted with an oil enamel paint. I made a mistake and tried to paint a coat over the area I messed up and made things worse.

It seems like I will need to remove the paint off the section of wood now and repaint it. How would I go about removing that oil enamel paint? Sandpaper? If sandpaper, considering how thick the paint is, would I need to use a fine or coarse grain?

Any other suggestions from someone experienced with this would be very welcomed and appreciated. How do you remove oil enamel paint from wood?
A heatgun will lift the paint off. Chemicals may cause the paint to soak into the wood and stain it.How do you remove oil enamel paint from wood?
If you simply want to smooth it back out you can just use wet sand paper and water to smooth out the area if it is small. If it is a large area the use some furniture grade stripper. Put it on a little thick and let it sit for a little while. Don't ever let stripper dry before you scrape it. Make sure you tape and cover the parts of the furniture you don't want stripped.(Just in case.) Once you've stripped it down, let the wood dry overnight, give it a final sand with sandpaper medium to fine to extra fine. Prime let dry , sand and finally finish coat it. Always let enamel dry completely before going over with the next coat.
apply ';Strip Ease';(Home Depot) with a brush, let sit for about 30 min, gently scrape right off, you may need a second application for difficult areas, to clean it when stripped, rub down with paint thinner, let dry for about 1 hour, lightly sand (fine) entire area going WITH the grain, brush away dust, if you're painting, prime it first, otherwise stain and poly it
You can use a chemical paint stripper (methylene chloride based) available from hardware/paint stores or use a hot air gun to melt %26amp; then scape off.
Two things here, either let the paint dry good then paint over or, use ';Zip-strip'; from Ace hardware and take the paint off this way.
Through the closet away and buy a new one, or just come out of it.
    sandpaper
Laqure thinner. be carefull if you don't want to damage wood underneath.
    There are two options...

    1. Use a heat gun and a scraper to remove the paint. This is a good means to remove many layers of old paint without the mess of a liquid stripper. The down side is the detail areas such as mouldings and fancy scroll work are very hard to do.

    2. A liquid stripper will also remove multiple layers of paint. The down side here is the mess of the process and the possibility of some residual col;or being left behind in the grain of the wood that will require sanding to remove.

    GOOD LUCK!!!

There is a product out there called ';Goof-Off'; sold at Home Depot, Low's, or any paint store.

Once you spray it on you can get the bulk of it up with a paper towel. Then spray once more for set in stains and scrub with a plastic bristle brush until gone.

However, the product has a lasting oil based smell, so I also recommend using ';Resolve'; after the paint is up. This will remove any remaining stain or smell in the carpet.

Try using mineral spirits in a spray bottle......squirt the area and then PUSH the carpet in one direction wwith a painters 5-way tool or a flat putty knife. Dab up what rises with a clean rag and repeat the process in all directions.

If that clears up the paint, you can simply wash it out with soap and water to bring it back to normal.
in the past i have used turpentine to remove oil based paint from carpet. test in a hidden area (inside the closet) to make sure the carpet can handle it first. put the turpentine on a dry cloth and blot the stain. continue doing this (using a clean part on the cloth each time) until the stain is gone. it will stink!! once the stain is gone, pour dish soap directly onto the carpet, and work it around (to remove the oil). then dab with a clean wet sponge to remove the soap. if all else fails, get a throw rug to cover the spot!!!

    good luck!

Paintbrushes are expensive. Protect your investment by cleaning them immediately after use. A paintbrush used with oil-based paints can wear out quickly if not cleaned and stored properly.

Can I use oil paint just by iteslf?

Like, without ANY oil, thinner, etc.

Could I?Can I use oil paint just by iteslf?
Yes you can (But I agree with the first poster's comments about it). But check out ';Impasto';. It's a hard technique to learn but some artists can really create beautiful work. (Link below shows some examples from a Google search). I like using an additive or oil, it makes the paints smoother %26amp; easier to spread, but that's just my preferance. Can I use oil paint just by iteslf?
While at art college paint was provided at one stage of the course, this was purchased from paint manufacturers,in tins and was the thickness of a thick jam.It was much cheaper than buying it in tubes and enabled the students to experiment with impasto techniques, applying the paint straight on without diluting with oil or turps. Some artists use paint straight from the tube, even drawing with it.
Joseph brings up a good point; why?

Are you just feeling creative, and want to step out with an idea? If so then I encourage you to jump in with both feet. Experimentation will take you on wonderful journey with in the art world.

I would suggest though that since oil paint is thick as mentioned above you try out your idea with a painting knife. for one it will allow you to move it around more smoothly and freely. And two I think you will be surprised with the effect you come up with. I often use it just as an exercises in limits. as it pushes you to go with the first effect created. as you will see it tends to blend together and change rapidly. So it forces you to just allow your hand and mind to work in sync quicker and more freely.

Thus the joy of creative experimentation.

Give it a try. You might be surprised and good luck.
Yes you can.... All you need is either a stiff bristle brush, or what most people do with heavy impasto paints.... use a knife, after every use that you want to clean the knife, you wipe it on a rag... most preferably your older brothers shirt, or your best suit.... Yup... that'll do! Hehehe Lol! Seriously, use a rag or a cloth...... You can cover an awful lot with palate knives! I have done some paintins with the knife alone... its pretty simple. Not as quick to blend on the palate as it is on the painting itself though......... Hope this helped! PS: remember that thick paint takes alot longer to dry, in some cases as long as 3 months.....even longer.....so be alert when selling oil impastos....
You technically could, though I don't know why you would want to. The pigment would be very thick, and much harder to manipulate. It also wouldn't go very far, resulting in the need to buy more pigment, more often. The painting also wouldn't last as long.
You can, but if you put it on really thick it may crack as it drys. You would need to find a way to cover it to keep the surface from drying before the inside could dry.
yeah, it just wouldn't last as long and it would be kinda thick depending on the brand of oil paints you have.
i would and do use it as is---it covers better

I've only worked w/ oil paints and wanted to know if I could use them to paint a mural on the wall.?

I really enjoy using oil and am very framiliar w/ it, I want this to last. But everything I see on murals is done w/ Acrylic paints. Is there a reason for this or is this just the best medium to use?I've only worked w/ oil paints and wanted to know if I could use them to paint a mural on the wall.?
Everyone makes good points, but as an interior designer I can tell why our preference is for latex or acrylic. If the client desires to ever change back to paint (latex house paint, for example) you've created a nighmare using oils. With acrylics, you simply prime and re-paint the wall. Using oils means that the wall must either be re-painted with oil based paint (which most homeowners don't like to do because of the lasting fumes) or you have to strip off the oil paint used for the mural or scuff coat the wall with drywall or joint compound which makes the process longer and more expensive.I've only worked w/ oil paints and wanted to know if I could use them to paint a mural on the wall.?
I was an airbrush artist and I used latex paint but I studied the works of Boris Vallejo and using his methods, yes, you can use oils but not with the linseed oil to thin it. You need to use mineral spirits in stead. It does just as good as linseed oil but it dries over night or as little as three hours. The one reason for using acrylics is the drying time and the mineral spirits will cut your drying time when using oil paints.

You can really thank Boris for that info.
This choice is mostly a low sheen of personal preference, but it may help to make your choice based on the advantages each type of paint offers. Quality interior acrylic paints provide better long-term flexibility and resistance to cracking and chipping. They also tend to resist yellowing with age in areas protected from sunlight. They emit less odour, clean up with water and are not flammable. Oil-based paints offer superior one-coat hiding and better adhesion to difficult surfaces such as those not thoroughly cleaned. Oil-based paints allow for greater 'opentime' or length of time the paint may be brushed before it sets; and superior resistance to 'blocking' or face-to-face sticking and abrasion, once cured.

Will oil-based paint prevent urine odour emanating from a wood floor?

We are painting a wooden bathroom floor but the area around the toilet smells badly of urine (I guess me and my two sons are partly responsible!). We have cleaned the floor thoroughly and painted over it using an eco-friendly water-based paint but the floor stll stinks. I was wondering if an oil-based gloss would effectively mask the smell. Any ideas? Or do we have to sand it away? Will oil-based paint prevent urine odour emanating from a wood floor?
an oil-based paint won't really help because oils still breath. this is tough. it's hard to say just how far the urine odor has penetrated the wood. it may even be down to the subfloor! if you're lucky, you can just sand it and refinish it. vinegar works well against some pet odor smells, but i'm not sure how well it will work in your situation. (you must alway be careful when wetting wood.) good luck! Will oil-based paint prevent urine odour emanating from a wood floor?
I would start with soaking the floor with household bleach. That should react with the ammonia in the urine enough to make the smell tolerable. Then paint over with a pigmented varnish. Parks makes a sealer that is alcohol based and dries in minutes. Then re coat with what ever you like.
You can't sand it away. It's in the fibers of the wood. All you need is an odor blocking primer. I think KILZ makes one.

If you want a wood floor, sand it, as usual, and stain. When you coat with the poly, it, too, blocks the smell.
Bicarbonate of soda - sprinkle liberally around the pedestal leave for an hour or three hoover up the excess and hopefully that will be you floor odour free without to much strain on the environment

If you do not have a pallete already I would recomend this basic colours:

    Titanium white- opaque

    or Zinc white- semi-transparent

    Ivory black

    raw sienna

    burnt sienna

    raw umber

    burnt umber

    Cadmium yellow

    Cadmium red

    Ultramarine blue

    Extra colors:

    Naples Yellow (nice for blending)

Alizarin Crimson. warms your reds and pinks

Paynes Gray. A very nice colour for shades (it's a bluish gray)

    Sap Green.

    Cadmium yellow lemon

Oh, and if you were already working with acrylics you can add a little Liquin to your oils, so they can dry a bit more quickly.

    Hope that works for you.

    Good luck

C茅sarWhat is a good brand of oil paint for a beginner?
I started with Liquitex, but I really prefer Golden brand paints, both acrylic and oil.

They're very good quality, and not too terribly expensive. (Not cheap, either)
I use the brand Georgian, they come in big tubes and cost about $10 and I like their fluidity and the way they flow.
start with acryllic. its more forgiving.
try windsor %26amp; newton (students) or lb ( lefranc %26amp; bourgois) It will give you freshness and vivid clours
Hi best of luck to you beginning your art! When I got started the teacher gave us a list of what to buy. The local junior college had a bookstore that sold it to us with a discount for being a student...If you are a art student check in your city for stores that might do the same for you. But if not..you can get good paints at Michaels craft store or Joann's fabric shop. When I started out I ordered all my paints from www.danielsmith.com I was not disappointed. They had prices for everyone's wallet. Their own brands Daniel Smiths are great. Oils, acrylics, watercolors all kinds of art supplies call them for one of their catelogs..best of luck ...
Use Winton Oil Colors, the student grade. Don't buy a starter set. Just get red, blue, yellow, black and a large tube of white. You can make any color you want with these colors. This is what I started with and it worked for me. Also starting with only a few colors helps you understand color and what it takes to get color mixing just right. Hobby Lobby is a good place to get paint when it is on sale.
    Use GRUMBACHER.
when i got my first oil paints, i bought Reeves because they are cheap but they are good on quality and you can buy them in a set. I also like Winsor-Newton, but those are a bit more expensive. as far as brushes go, i use the Loew -Cornell white nylon brushes, but that's just preference and probably what's good for acrylics are good for oil...

Can you paint over re-touch varnish on an oil painting?

Also, can you put regular varnish over re-touch varnish?

Finally, why does it say on the bottle of my winsor-newton bottle of re-touch varnish that it's only for ';temporary';?

Ugh...I wish I had kept my notes from college...Can you paint over re-touch varnish on an oil painting?
Yes, you can varnish over re-touch. I have never had a problem as long as you keep the layers of varnish fairly thin. Too much will look too goopy and glossy.

Retouch varnish is meant to be a temporary varnish, just to get the dried paint colors to look as if they were wet so you can do touch ups with some accuracy. ';Regular'; varnish is permanent, to be applied when your painting is done. Can you paint over re-touch varnish on an oil painting?
You want to match materials. Do you know how old the painting is? Older varnishes yellow with age, so touching up with a non-fading varnish will make a glaring stripe over time. Try asking the Metropolitan Museum's contact page, they have world class restorers.

How much oil paint do you have to use?

I just got a starter set of oi paints, a bottle of linseed oil and and pait thinner. The tubes of paint a pretty teeny, and I have a medium sized tube of black and white. The problem is i barely have any paint! I have never used oils before, how do i use the paint? Do you not need very much then mix in the linseed oil?How much oil paint do you have to use?
PAINT QUESTIONS ? TRY http://www.how-much-to-paint.comHow much oil paint do you have to use?
It depends a lot on the effect you want to achieve. If you want a thin like painting just a little but would do.

Myslef I have a heavy hand and always use lots. However I like my paintings with lots of texture. I never use the licenseed oil either, just medium.
I usually squeeze out a small pea sized amount of the paint I need and squeeze out more pea sized amounts as I work as necessary. When you dry brush, a little bit of paint goes a long way. When you use linseed oil a little bit of paint goes a long way also but you use it up faster because you work faster. You have to let it dry between though depending on how much linseed oil you're using... I usually paint out my values regularly and then go back over it with linseed oil plus whatever colour I need to do a corrective glaze.
Well that's a tough one, and we've all asked it, at least once. Myself, I ask that question on a nearly daily basis. The problem is, there is no real answer. It'll depend very much on how you paint and what you're painting. So you are going to have to experiment. This way you'll find what is working for you.

Something that will be for certain, you'll never really get your feet wet with those itsy-bitsy tubes. Oil paint should last a good time on the pallet, so squeeze out about quarter of each tube, then start on your work, see how it spreading, how it's covering, the texture you are getting. Now, can you see how much you are going to need?

At this point, mess around. Scrub the paint out so it's thin, splurge it so it's thick. You'll notice differences in the colour, the luminescence, how the paint behaves. Different colour will have very different properties of opacity, tint, and 'length', maybe even thicker or thinner. Discovering all this stuff, and what it can do for you is one of the best facets of being an oil painter, the alchemy of the paint and how you channel that.

Next comes mediums. This is anything you add to your paint to get an effect. I don't want to lead you here, again experiment. Mediums add another dimension to your paint, and extend the possibilities, as you go on you will see a sometimes bewildering array of products of the market. Some are very traditional, some very hi-tec, maybe start with the stuff that's been used over hundreds of years, then see where that takes you. Have fun.

Lastly I'd say; Those small tubes, use em' up and move on. Once you buy larger amounts of paint you will not be constrained by the amount you use, you'll not treat paint too preciously. Look for a good balance between price and quality. I think Windsor and Newton Winton are pretty good, likewise Talens Amsterdam or Lukas Studio. All are good paints at reasonable prices.

Ok, so get the bit between your teeth and push hard. Make something great...enjoy it

Ican draw very good, but I want to paint(oil), don't know how to start can you help me?

I am busy with my kids and I don't have time to take classes, I bought everything I need and don't know what should I do exactly, I painted before and have some of my work, but I know I did not do the right way(I was just creative), can someone help me on this?Ican draw very good, but I want to paint(oil), don't know how to start can you help me?
Guerro is right get some books on paintingand start reading, the North Light Books are very instructional.

Painting might come from the heart but it takes a lot of planing to make a great painting, withiout planning and thinking a painting through you will only get an averege painting at most.

Degas said: A painting is a thing that requires as much knavery, as much malice, as much vice as the perpetration of a crime.

And another of my very succesful artist friend always says that beautiful is a liquor store at 2am , a painting must be good.

I think that they know what they are talking about.

good luckIcan draw very good, but I want to paint(oil), don't know how to start can you help me?
I don't believe that you can learn (proper ways of) painting with just books. If you don't have time for classes, don't you have a painter/friend who could help you ? Or a private teacher (some are not too expensive, I paid about 3 Euros per hour) ?

Look around, I'm sure you will find. And good luck.
creative is the right way use thickness and stroke direction.
Art ability is not something that can be taught...it is aquired over time with practice. I would suggest starting with a friendlier medium...oils for a beginner can be tricky...try water-based acrylics first and just have fun!!!

Get your kids involved to...they are excellent sources of inspiration!
i would just paint what u feel. painting comes form he heart. and i would actually recommend starting out with acrylics. they're less expensive and they dry a lot faster. oils are easier to blend though. um.. i would watch some movies that could show you some techniques and you could try the library for some information. \

    good luck
When my brother first suggested i try oils i didn't have also didn't have a clue as to how to start a painting. Most of what i had done up untill then was with pen, ink, and watercolor. So, i went to the library and checked out just about every book that had to do with oil painting. The first book i think you should try to find, is one on underpainting. My work can be checked out at hellosanantonio.com under artist name ''Guerro''.

What's the differences between Oil paint,Acrylic, and Tempera?

Is the outcome look the same? What's the differences between Oil paint,Acrylic, and Tempera?
no the outcome is not the same, tempera is more of a watery consistency, acrylic is thicker and dries like plastic...What's the differences between Oil paint,Acrylic, and Tempera?
    the difference is the medium
The binder in the paint which gives it different qualities.
The medium - how long they take to dry, how they cover. When finally dry/set the differences are more subtle.

How do I prepare a surface to use latex over oil base paint?

I want to paint latex over what I believe is oil based paint. Is there a base I can use so the latex will adhere properly?

Also, I've heard there's a way to check to see if old paint on a surface is latex or oil based. Does anyone know how to do this? How do I prepare a surface to use latex over oil base paint?
they sell primers that you can paint oil or water base paint over it. just read the labelHow do I prepare a surface to use latex over oil base paint?
To check which paint you are dealing with dab a q-tip in fingernail polish remover and rub a small area on your wall. If its Latex paint some of the paint will come off on the q-tip, if its Oil based paint nothing will happen.

If you are dealing with Oil based paint you will need to prep the walls by sanding them high grit sandpaper- but keep in mind you are not trying to remove the paint you are merely scuffing them up a bit to hold onto the primer better.

After you have finished sanding you will need to vacuum and wipe down the walls to remove all dust.

Once your walls are clean you will need to prime them- I would recommend Kilz, it offers great coverage and you can find it pretty much anywhere paint it sold.

After the primer is dry you can begin painting with your choice latex paint. Just keep in mind when your buying your paint that you will most likely have to apply two coats.

It may seem like alot but its really not that hard- just time consuming. Good Luck!!

  • How long does it take for high gloss oil based paint to dry?

I have painted my window frames in a high gloss white enamel paint. The paint is oil based. How long should it take to dry. I painted 12 hours ago and it is still wet to touch and very sticky. How long does it take for high gloss oil based paint to dry?
FOREVER ...lol. It'll be sticky or tacky for a couple of days;)How long does it take for high gloss oil based paint to dry?
Depends, somewhat, on the temperature and humidity level, but generally at least 24-48 hours to dry to the touch and about 30 days to completely ';cure'; or harden.

Oil-based paint takes a lot longer to dry than latex (water-based) paint, but it is much more durable in the long run and better-suited to applications such as window/door frames and baseboards, trim, etc ... places that get a lot of wear.
What does the label say? Maybe you painted over something without priming it first.

If so you will have to remove the paint,; prime then repaint.

I had a trunk I painted red without priming it and it never did dry after two weeks.

I was so disgusted I put it on my back porch to dry and it still didn*t dry.
Usually about a day, some paints take longer than others...

I would have went with latex paint though.....

How to remove an oil base paint from cement driveway?

My husband painted the floor of our garage with garage floor paint. He went over the edge and decided to paint some of the driveway. It looks awful when the garage door is closed. There is a dark gray strip going across the top of the driveway. Please tell me there is a way to remove it. It looks trashy and I don't think the HOA will be happy about it, because I'm not. Please help! How to remove an oil base paint from cement driveway?
I have some experience with this, as a painting contractor. As careful as one can be to not let stray drops get on cement, sometimes it happens.

Lacquer thinner will also raise/remove oil based paint. It will soften and lift it, and then you may need to use muratic acid to get up any of the residual staining that may have penetrated into the pores of the concrete, depending on how old/ smooth the concrete is.How to remove an oil base paint from cement driveway?
There are commercial paint removers that will remove oil-based paint from cement, paint, etc.

How do I accelerate oil-based paint drying time?

I'm painting the front door on my house with an oil-based paint. I don't want to leave the door open for the 12+ hours that it will take for the paint to dry. If I close the door, it will stick to the weather stripping and probably smudge the paint. How do I get the paint on the edge of the door dry to the touch in a shorter period of time? How do I accelerate oil-based paint drying time?
Your local paint store will have a couple products that can help. The first is Japan Driers. Acts as an accelerant. Another option is Penetrol, which I use every time I paint with oil as it gives a stronger finish and allows the paint to flow better. Something to consider though, most door manufacturers recommend painting with a water borne paint or you void the warranty, especially on any plastic door light trim. I like to use Grahams exterior ceramic satin. Dries quickly, goes on wonderfully and sets hard as a rock plus is highly scrubb-ableHow do I accelerate oil-based paint drying time?
put space heaters and box fans in the room.
Heat and dry air helps. In the tropics where the humidity is high car painters have paint ovens. They are basically a garage with lots of floodlights. You do need ventilation so that the volatile elements in the paint have somewhere to go.
Ah..finally a question that I'm an expert about!

You can buy an accelerater at most paint stores but here's a trick, mix a little paint thinner in the paint,it evaporates very quickly and quickens the drying process.

Oil paint also dries faster when heated, try the blow dryer. When it's dry to the touch you can tape

(green painters tape) your weather stripping and still close the door without any damage.

    Good Luck,

    D
I would have suggested a latex paint. There are products now that are as durable as oil paint with very little drying time. But now that you already painted the door, use japan-dry. You can find it at a big-box hardware store. Otherwise, get out the fans and maybe even a space heater (BE CAREFUL!). And never allow pregnant women around oil paints, they are linked to miscarriages. Safety first!
you can use paint diluent, but oil painting takes about a week.

You can try placing it in front of a fan but i never tried it so i dont know if its going to work. Personally i like acrilic paint more than oil, exacly because of how much time you save. Take care and i hope i helped
Why oil? Best paint for doors is acrylic latex. Fast dry and water cleanup. Just as durable as any oil-based conglormoration.
paint the door early in the day, the oil based paint should be skinned over in about 4 hours. coat the gaskets on the door frame with a light coat of vaseline, wipe off any excess, then wait as long as you can before you shut the door. i wouldn't worry about any smudges, since when the door is closed no one will ever see them. for faster drying, do light coats of paint, rather than one thick coat. even if that means you will need to do a second coat next weekend. this is how i do doors. good luck, hope this helps.

How do I apply texture to a wall painted w/oil-based paint-does it have to be prepped?

The wall is drywall. Oil based paint. Will the texture adhere to unprepped surface? How do I apply texture to a wall painted w/oil-based paint-does it have to be prepped?
You have a big problem. Texturing over oil-based paint attracts fire ants and termites. I'd recommend covering the wall with carpet samples using superglue. Instant texture and quite unique! How do I apply texture to a wall painted w/oil-based paint-does it have to be prepped?
Make sure the wall is clean, free of dust or grease and you should be ok.
I used to work at Home Depot. Yes you can apply texture to a wall that is painted via oil-based paint. There are a couple steps you want to do:

    1. Make sure the paint is well adhered. Scrape off/sand any loose or flaking paint. If the paint isn't holding onto the wall, the texture won't be able to either.

    2. ';Scuff sand'; the wall. This does not mean you need to sand every inch or sand much off. The idea here is to ruff up the surface of the paint so the texture can physically bond to the wall.

    3. Clean the wall with TSP. You can find this in any home improvement/hardware store. This will remove all dirt and grease from the walls.

    4. After the above steps, you should be able to apply wall texture to the wall per the directions on the container.

    Good luck!
Go to Home Depot and ask them. They say 'You can do it, and they can help';.
No problem...... Clean, dry, and Prime. Ask where you buy the texture paint if you should use oil base primer or latex for the brand you are using. It will say on the can instructions also.

Can I use oil based paint over the top of latex paint?

I am about to repaint my kitchen cabinets. We made the huge miskake of using latex paint the first time. Will oil based paint stick to latex or do we need to remove the latex? Can I use oil based paint over the top of latex paint?
It depends on what is under the latex--if there's a layer of oil-based paint or varnish as a base coat, then the latex, and you put oil-base over the top of that, you'll likely have problems. Also, what is the problem with the latex? If it's failing (paint peeling, chipping, etc) putting more paint (of any sort) on top won't solve the problem--in fact, more paint on top of failing paint usually just makes it fail faster.

IF your cabinets were properly primed, IF you don't have a ';sandwich'; of oil-latex-oil, and IF the latex isn't failing, but was a mistake for some other reason, you can probably re-paint w/out problems. But make sure before you waste more paint and labor and have to strip the cabinets anyway. You can always paint one door, wait a couple weeks, and see what happens.

Added: If the paint rubs off from ordinary cleaning, it isn't adhered well to layer underneath. Another layer of paint will only stick to the latex, so it won't be adhered well either. You need to strip the cabinets to do a good job. Fortunately, is sounds like the latex is a pretty thin layer, so it won't be too awful. Use Citristrip and steel wool or scotchbrite, open windows for good ventilation (Citristrip is ';less toxic'; not ';non-toxic';). Make sure everything is clean, dry and degreased, then prime with quality oil-based primer made for your application (ask for info at a good paint store). Top coat with semi-gloss oil enamel. Again, if you're unsure of potential results, do a door or cabinet side first, wait for the paint to cure, and test by cleaning as you normally would. If it fails again, at least you won't have spent the time painting all the cabinets. Can I use oil based paint over the top of latex paint?
Take MrKnowItAll's advice. His is best of all, I know, my Dad was a Master Carpenter, meaning he could build a house from pre-foundation to the last coat of paint inside or out. Your paint is doing what is called ';chalking'; the powdery substance on your fingers. Paint also cracks, chips, peels, and alligators, thats when there are numerous areas of raise paint that resembles the rough back of the alligator hence the name. Do be sure to clean surfaces thoroughly and use a tack cloth to remove any traces of residue. Be sure to use drop cloths ( the big plastic sheets ) to protect surfaces you don't want painted by possible drips. Don't like the smell of the paint? A drop or two of vanilla will take the odor out of it.Also remember to let your base coat have plenty of time to dry, or speed it up with a window fan to move the air and speed drying time. Let each coat of color dry before the next coat. And if the previous paint is a dark color be sure to clean the surface as well as prepping it for a lighter color. You might need two coats of sealer for really dark colors that bleed through like dark red, or wine colored paints tend to do. When in doubt about wood on the outside of your home, sand or clean and prime before painting. A neighbor of mine wasted 9 gallons of expensive paint on the exterior of their house before I learned of it. When I asked if they had primed the surface first they stared with blank eyes at me. They had no idea about priming before painting on unfinished or pourous surfaces at all.

But do as he has reccommended and you will be tired but a lot happier with the resulting work.
If you are up for the extra work, I would strip the cabinets and do a oil based primer and oil based enamel. This is what I think you will be the happiest with.

I don't like latex on cabinets but since you are all ready there, you could give the cabinets a very good cleaning with TCP, some light sanding and repaint with a good latex enamel.
Some times cheep way became expansive !

    I don't think it merge....
Yes, you can. Sand it. Apply an undercoat just for that purpose and paint away. I did it in the bathroom and it works just fine.
oil over latex is ok...just give a slight sanding b4 painting...

    so it sticks better..
The oil will stick to the latex, but if the latex is peeling off and not sticking well then whatever you put on top will peel off as well. If you did not prime your cabinets with a high-adhesive primer the first time I don't think you have any choice but to strip off the paint that you already have on them before painting something else overtop.
try a good primer under the paint first

Is it ok to use Latex paint over oil based paint without primer 1st?

My window sills need a refreshing paint job and I think its oil base paint..I would like to use Latex to paint over them.. It is semi gloss and thats what I plan on using again but would rather not use the oil base paint this time.Is it ok to use Latex paint over oil based paint without primer 1st?
You MUST MUST MUST use a primer when painting latex over oil base paint. If you don't your dried lated paint will just peel right off.Is it ok to use Latex paint over oil based paint without primer 1st?
You should primer first cause the latex paint will just peel off....

If you have a lot of coats on it, I would strip it off first......
If the existing is oil-base, chip up any loose paint. Do a light sanding to feather out any chipped areas and for good adhesion for the latex and then prime it. Latex is the best choice since it will retain original color better.

Test for color fastness in an inconspicuous place as some ';bomber jacket'; finishes dont like solvents at all. If it is fine I would first try Odorless Mineral spirits- this has worked many times for me when I have been called in to repair a sofa when painters got overspray or drips on the leather furniture. If it doesnt work my next choice would be Naptha (zippo lighter fluid is basically naptha) it has been successful in getting all manner of things off leather.

The next choice would be denatured alcohol- but it has much more chance of pulling color, though carefully done I have removed many ink marks with about 75% of the time not having to match and re-color the finish.

All of these I would use with an old white t-shirt wrapped around my hand.

    Hope this helps

    David
Get Goo Gone, it comes in a little can. You have to be really careful...dip a cotton swab into the Goo Gone and gently rub on the spot until it starts to lift. Periodically, dab with a dry terry cloth or towel to get excess Goo Gone off the material and to remove the paint. Keep doing this until the spot is gone. When you are finished, use a lotion based leather cleaner to remove the excess Goo Gone from the jacket. I did this myself and it worked...and the paint had been on my jacket for two years!
Try to put it in the freezer and chip it off.
I would take it to the cleaners.

When and how was oil paint developed? What are the unique characteristics of oil paint?

The Flemish artists Jan and Hubert van Eyck are sometimes (wrongly) given the credit for inventing oil paint in the early 1400s. They were possibly the first to perfect the technique for use in the painting of pictures,

Oil paint is unique in it's slow drying time (enabling blending and similar techniques) and it's translucence. The two main types of paint that were used before 1400 (egg tempera and fresco) allowed neither of these.

Acrylics can reproduce some of the qualities of oil paint but many artists find the fast drying time a problem.

You need to talk to a paint store. I have tried that with very little success. The Latex paint doesn't hold well on the top of oil based.

They may suggests lightly sanding the wall, which will help the latex paint hold better.

Is there a difference between oil paint brushes and acrylic paint brushes?

The difference is not natural vs. synthetic, but texture. Acrylic brushes are smoother, and oil brushes have rougher bristles. Good acrylic brushes can be sable or a synthetic equivalent, sometimes called sabeline. They could also be made of nylon. Oil brushes are usually made of hog or other animal hair. Some brushes can be multi-purpose, especially if you thin down oil paint as an earlier poster said, but you shouldn't use very soft brushes with oils. Oils actually are rougher on brushes than acrylics. Is there a difference between oil paint brushes and acrylic paint brushes?
Usually synthetic brushes are used for acrylic and natural hair is used for oils. Oils are easier on brushes and don't use destroy brushes as fast as acrylics. Since natural hair is more expensive they are used more carefully. Is there a difference between oil paint brushes and acrylic paint brushes?
there is but you can use acrylic brushes with oils if you thin the paint, acrylic brushes are watecolour brushes, oil brushes are made of hogs hair because the paint is thicker
for the most part no. You could use natural brushes for acrylics too, if you can afford it.
They're made to be painted with that specific type of paint.

Simple solution: oil over oil; water over water or oil over water. Any other solution you will have to prime walls with an acrylic base primer and then you can use a latex finish.

Things to get oil paint out of brushes?

i dont have any paint thinner, or special soaps to get oil paint out of my brushes. does anyone have any ideas about how i could do this with some things i might have laying around the apt?Things to get oil paint out of brushes?
oil paint takes forever to dry, so I suggest you just go to the nearest art store, even Hobby Lobby and buy some paint thinner. I wouldn't try any home remedies and then end up ruining your brushes.Things to get oil paint out of brushes?
paint thinner is the best. If it is a nylon bristle brush, you could try nail polish remover. If it is an expensive boar's hair brush, you would be better off dipping it back in the paint and then wrapping it in saran wrap or a plastic bag until you can get some paint remover or thinner.

Just keep it wet untoil you can manage to clean it properly
    Liquid dish soap works fine.

But, washing oil paint down the drain is bad for the environment.
soak in boiling water or try some rubbing alcohol.

Can I put acrylic paint over DRY oil paint?

Im confused about this. Obviously you cant if its wet but what if the oil is dry, will the acrylic hold? Can I put acrylic paint over DRY oil paint?
You have not described what this is. Are you thinking of a painting? Is this on some form of craft project and what is the material support (surface material being painted) ?

This is not good practice. You can put oil over acrylic but should generally avoid acrylic over oil unless this is something you don't care whether it lasts or not. Generally, oil should go on oil and acrylic should go on acrylic.

Acrylic is not rigid as one post above states. Though it is plastic it is flexible as many forms of plastic are flexible. Oil is more brittle than acrylic. When acrylic paint dries you can peel it off a smooth surface and it is like rubber.

Oil needs to be handled with care even when placing oil over oil. Layers of oil should increase in the proportion of oil they contain with thinner, less oily, layers under thicker and more oily layers. This is due to the manner in which oil paint oxidizes. You have to account for each layer's drying characteristics. If this is done incorrectly the top layers will wrinkle and crack. Can I put acrylic paint over DRY oil paint?
Of course you can. I definitely suggest priming it first. One coat of primer should do fine, then 1-2 coats of paint. You can ask anyone in the hardware store you buy your paint, they're all usually experts at it. At least the one I work for.
its posible, as long as the oil application is thin, if its too thick, the surface might be too shiny for acylic paint to stay. but dry on dry is ok.
No! Oils even when dry always moving. Acrylics are plastic and become rigid. You would end up with problems down the line.

Will oil paint with lead give me cancer?

I just bought 2 tubes of white paint and it has a warning that both of them has lead in them. Do you have to consume the paint in order for it to cause cancer or can it happen in other ways too? Will oil paint with lead give me cancer?
Lead has to be ingested to cause lead poisoning. Now days paints have been formulated to be safer than their predisesors. I wouldn't worry about getting cancer. You have a greater chance of getting skin cancer from the sun than you do from painting! Will oil paint with lead give me cancer?
The others are correct -- don't eat it or paint yourself with it -- it causes brain damage (not cancer).

But they missed something -- what do you plan to paint? if you are making artwork for the wall, you are going to be fine. If you are painting toys or furniture or anything that will be given to children, then STOP -- children are most likely to be harmed by things painted with this stuff. This is in part because their brains are developing and in part because they put everything in their mouths.
You can get cancer just by being in the room with your paint. It's probably too late for you already. Do you really think that a store would sell you something that will inevitably result in you getting cancer? Sheesh. I'm gonna go smoke a cigarette.
lead has to be consumed to be harmful I believe, but even then small amounts wont kill u. and besides, street lights are supposed to give u cancer too but people still go out every night right? life sucks when u constantly worry about what could potentially harm u.
Well of course dont practically bathe yourself in it lol But i'm sure youll be alright as long as you dont eat it or anything like that. Goodbye Vote me in 2031!!! :) WORLD DOMINATION!!!!!!!
Lead doesn't cause cancer, it causes lead poisoning. Don't eat the paint or smear it all over yourself and you'll be fine.

Thanks thanks thanksCan i use methylated spirits to mix oil paint?
No. I had to look up what methylated spirits were and what I've found is that it is similar or the same as denatured alcohol. This is not used to thin oil paint. Don't use it.Can i use methylated spirits to mix oil paint?
sure you can, if you want to destroy the paint and your brushes!
First off, I do not know. But as a Ph.D. chemist, I suggest that methylated spirits (wood alcohol, methyl alcohol, methanol) will not be compatible, will not be miscible with the oils and resins that form your paints. Some liquid phase will ';sweat out'; of the paint. You say you have turps. I'm surprised you cannot find linseed oil. Other unsaturated oils may do. Consult with others about soybean oil.
yes,you can do that but, I recommend you turpentine.

Best ways to remove oil and paint from cement garage floor?

House we moved into has a nice 2 car garage, but the floor is stained in several places with oil or paint. Some of the stains could also be from paint thinner or similar substance. Since I've never dealt with this before, thought someone out there might know the answer to this problem.Best ways to remove oil and paint from cement garage floor?
You aren't saying if you want to paint to a uniform appearance. If you just want it clean scrape off as much as will come off easily. Use a degreaser such as Simple Green used full strength, to remove oil and grease. Use paint remover on the paint. Most stains won't come out of concrete. I moved into a house where dogs had been kept in the garage for a long time and cleaned and repeatedly bleached the floor to kill the smell. The stains remained. Etching is great for opening the pores for new paint or stain, but you should visit a store like Home Depo or equivalent and talk with them about what you want to do. They have several different chemicals to restore and clean and etch.Best ways to remove oil and paint from cement garage floor?
Muriatic acid will etch the concrete and may not remove the oil. Try this on the oil spot.: Buy a bag of clay type cat litter, pulverize it on the oil spot with the toe of an old shoe. Really grind it into the spot. The clay will absorb the oil, just sweep it up. For paint: Remove what you can with a putty knife, then try the kitty litter on the spot. Light sandpaper may work on the spot as well.
I have been told that Wal Mart sells something that will clean

If you want to frame a picture done in Oil Pastels on paper, also, Oil Paint on paper, do you use glass?

I have a couple of oil pastel pictures I have done myself, and a picture painted by my grand mother I would like to frame and display, all done on paper. I can do the framing myself, but I know you don't put glass on an oil painting on canvas, I was wondering if the same applies to oils on paper? If you want to frame a picture done in Oil Pastels on paper, also, Oil Paint on paper, do you use glass?
You can frame oil paintings on stretched canvas behind glass. Some museums do this when the work is particularly fragile. Glare makes these frames undesirable for patrons but it is a worthwhile compromise to losing the work entirely. Within your home you can do whatever you want. It isn't going to pose a risk to the art. Being on paper you should mount these pictures behind glass. If you want to frame a picture done in Oil Pastels on paper, also, Oil Paint on paper, do you use glass?
You can use glass but the artwork should not be placed directly against the glass. An Archival acid free matting can be used to give a space between the glass and artwork. Furthermore, for conservation purposes you may use UV or Conservation Glass.
Be sure U mat them so that the actual surface of the art work does not touch the glass. There needs to be a small space between them for expansion and contraction as moisture content changes within a room. However minor that may be.

I painted over a canvas as practice and would like to reuse it. How should I go about removing oil-based paint from my canvas. How do you remove oil based paint from a canvas?
You can't after it has dried. Paint over it. If it is still wet, you can remove it with lots of odorless mineral spirits, which is a paint thinner. It is a messy job. You should wear gloves. Outside, if possible. I have done it many times, but while I was working with the wet paint. How do you remove oil based paint from a canvas?
If the oil painting is recently dry (within a couple of months) you can use Acetone to remove it. Do this outside if possible using rubber gloves. I don't like painting on old dried canvases. First all oil paints are somewhat transparent even those that are considered opaque are still effected by colors below them and also there is the texture built up by the strokes below. I guess it depends on what you are painting, but anything with any detail will be effected by the texture..honestly if you are painting on cotton canvas it is pretty cheap. The stretchers are more expensive. Re-stretch with new canvas. Have fun!
actually it CAN be removed, though it may take a little time and some elbow grease and some patience. Lacquer thinner will do the trick...it may take several rags, and you have to be careful in disposing of them, for both materials are flamable.
Just let it dry thoroughly and paint over it. That's what the old masters used to do.

  • How can I remove oil-based paint splatters from my hardwood floor?

I was primering my bathroom walls and got spots on my hardwood flooring and I need some suggestions on removing them. I've tried alcohol and ';goop'; with no luck. How can I remove oil-based paint splatters from my hardwood floor?
It depends on what your hardwood floor's finish is.

If it is older, it's likely to be varnish. In that case don't use turpensol or paint thinner, you'll have to physically scrape it off or risk dissolving the finish underneath. You can also try softening it first with hot soapy water, though this won't dissolve the paint.

If it's a fairly new floor, it's likely to be a polyurethane varnish. You can likely use turpensol or paint thinner, but I'd test the solvent on an out-of-the-way corner first. How can I remove oil-based paint splatters from my hardwood floor?
take a clean white rag and dab a little mineral spirits on it,then lightly buff the areas of the paint splatters. the mineral spirits will cut the oil base. don't over soak the wood or you could remove you finish.
If your floors are old and really rough or not finished...it's going to be tough...if not impossible. If they have a good finish on them...the new paint sure come right off with paint thinner. Even an old varnish finish will hold up to paint thinner if you use it. Just rub a lot.

Spray it.How do I paint over oil based paint on a popcorn ceiling with flat paint without sanding it.?
Since the popcorn has already been painted it is impossible to remove otherwise I'd suggest to do that - that sucks. Did you use an oil-based or a latex primer? If you used a latex primer, that would be the problem - an oil based primer should cover it. Use Kilz - the original one(not Kilz2) or Bullseye (Zinser brand). Paint the ceiling - if at all possible - with an airless sprayer for the best results. Personally, I think whoever invented that popcorn crap should be hung by his toenails!
not all primers are sealers, you need to apply a primer --sealer, like kilz, to the affected area, might take 2 coats, then paint the ceiling with a good quality ceiling paint, also if the popcorn is very old it may try to peel off when you are rolling the paint on, spraying will solve this problem, but every thing in the room will have to be removed , and the walls covered with visqueen, to prevent over spray from getting on them
use kills on the whole area, then repaint.
Don't rule out redoing the popcorn. It's easy.

    1) Put dpown drop cloth

    2) Scrape off the old stuff with a sharp scraper mounted on a broom handle.

    3) Spray on new popcorn using an aerosol-like spray can. (Check home depot for this)

How do I change oil based paint to washable paint from my wodden siding?

The siding is oil -based paint always became cracked every year since I chaged from washable paint (not oil paint). What should I do if I'd to remove all oil-based paint from thew siding? How do I change oil based paint to washable paint from my wodden siding?
It really depends on the shape of the paint on the wood siding. If it looks like alligator skin (because of all the cracks) then you might have more than just a paint problem as the wood my need replacing. From your question it sounds as if you might have painted over oil based paint with water based acrylic without first using a good quality primer to seal the old oil paint. If this is the case you or a paint contractor will need to completely scrape and sand all the cracked areas and where paint is peeling (use a mask, especially if you're not sure if lead paint was used in the past). Then completely wash down the siding to get all the dirt out of the pores. When you have a dry surface you are going to want to spray a light even coat of water based acrylic primer on first, wait at least 2-3 hours for it to cure enough for a coat of water based paint. With a high quality water based latex paint you should only need one coat after the primer and it should last 2-3 years looking like new on average. How do I change oil based paint to washable paint from my wodden siding?
There are chemical strippers that will remove the paint, granted it will be a tedious job. The cracking is probably from not using an oil primer to transition to latex paint. If you're lucky a power washer may just take off the latex %26amp; allow you to oil prime %26amp; then use latex.
It is a tough dirty job not meant for amatures to do.

You would proabally have to hire someone to scrap off all the paing. If you go that far I would not paint again, I'd stain the house with solid color stain.

If that clears up the paint, you can simply wash it out with soap and water to bring it back to normal.
in the past i have used turpentine to remove oil based paint from carpet. test in a hidden area (inside the closet) to make sure the carpet can handle it first. put the turpentine on a dry cloth and blot the stain. continue doing this (using a clean part on the cloth each time) until the stain is gone. it will stink!! once the stain is gone, pour dish soap directly onto the carpet, and work it around (to remove the oil). then dab with a clean wet sponge to remove the soap. if all else fails, get a throw rug to cover the spot!!!

    good luck!

  • How do i clean brushes dirty with oil paint?

Paintbrushes are expensive. Protect your investment by cleaning them immediately after use. A paintbrush used with oil-based paints can wear out quickly if not cleaned and stored properly.

    Instructions

Pour approximately 1/2 qt. paint thinner into a clean bucket. : Dip the bristles into the paint thinner and swish around. : Comb paint from the bristles with a wire brush. : Dip the bristles into the paint thinner again and swish. Throw out the used paint thinner and clean out the bucket. Repeat this process two more times. Place the handle of the paintbrush in the palms of your hands and rub hands back and forth to shake out residual moisture. Do this over a paper bag or bucket to keep the liquid from spraying on you. Put them in paint thinner or gasoline. not in the house the fumes are bad for you .. maybe in the garage or something .then let the solvents dissolve them and then rinse them off and put them in the sink with bleach and water let them soak and then wash with hot soapy water .that will take care of them..I used to be the worse at getting oils on brushes and lucky my mother knew how to take it out.. lolHow do i clean brushes dirty with oil paint?
    turpentine or paint thinner
Use 'turpentine' or go to a 'paint store' and get a 'brush cleaner' for 'oil paint.'
    wipe off with turnpentine
    mineral spirits
turpentine, then good old soap and water. Don't get oil paint in the sink, especially not in clumps. Hope that helps.
turpentine found at any hardware store
