What are the firmest brands of oil paint?

Which are the best? What are the firmest brands of oil paint?
If thickness is very important to, you might find that the cheaper paint, Winton, made by windsor and newton, is good for you. I'd describe this as second quality; whilst it doesn't have the heavy pigmentation of artist quality, it is still a good paint. And it is very thick and firm.

You might find that as you use more paints, different ranges suit you better for different applications or even individual colours, and you'll soon find your individual preferences. For example, I use mostly expensive artist colours, but I couldn't live without winton naples yellow.

Also a consideration has to be cost for some of us. On large paintings, for blocking in I use cheaper colour. Of these I think Talens Amsterdam Oils and Lukas Studio Oils are very very good. For Artists oils I tend to prefer either Talens Rembrandt Oils Or Michael Harding Oils.

Something else you might want to bare in mind. The chief difference in oils quality is; the amount of pigment used. Obviously This is going to show in colours like lake colours or Cadmium colours where the pigments are expensive, but in earth colours and modern chemical colours you may well find little discernible difference between artist quality and second quality paints.

You might find that if you really are concerned with how firm that paint is, you might want to look at mediums that you can add. Something called 'oleo pasto' by windsor and newton might help you, other paint manufactures make similar things. Oil paint can be unstable applied thickly, this will improve the structure, helping to prevent cracking and wrinkling. When working thickly it is very important to remember the fat over lean rule. I use a home made beeswax medium to get certain effects, I've seen painters who add sand, marble dust, glitter... you'll certainly pick stuff up as you go on.What are the firmest brands of oil paint?
If you are speaking of the thickest, Old Holland is both the thickest and one of the top oil paints available. It is what is known as a generally ';short'; paint in that the strokes keep their peaks and do not flatten out.

Doak

EDIT: You have not heard of them because the best is not the most common. Professional fine artists have heard of most as not all professionals are that knowledgeable of materials. Of those on this list Doak is the only one that cannot be purchased online. You have to order over the phone or go to New York to Robert Doak's store. MIchael Harding is well known in Europe. It is available at Dick Blick and The Italian Art Store in the US. Vasari is sold through their own website. The rest are widely available. Prices vary depending on sales and sources.
