You cannot use watercolor because it will not last long especially when you try and dust with furniture polish or any other spray cleaner. If you're thinking of using oil paint from an artist's paint set, my answer would be no to that as well. The best method for painting wooden furniture is to sand it, then seal it with a latex primer (1 to 2 coats depending on the condition of the wood). Next you can use an oil based paint in a glossy finish or flat or semi gloss latex paint that is water based. If you use the latter, you must follow with a clear polyurethane coat to protect the finish. If you are able to get the furniture outside, they sell some really good quality oil based spray paints now, much better than the quality of years ago.
