Is oil paint and acrylic paint the same? When is it good to use them?

well as some already said acrylic is water based and oil is oil based. Acrylic dries quickly, easier to handle, easy to clean, you don't have to use any mediums such as alkyds, mineral spirits, turpentine, gels, and other oils. Oils may thake days to dry, it's harder to use, they are harder to clean, and you use other chemicals as well as other mediums such as walnut oil, linseed, cold pressed linseed, poppy, copal medium, damar varnish etc....

It depends to what you want to do. I prefer by far oil paints, you can achieve a bigger variety in terms of its look. Whereas with acrylic it is very hard to do layers or have the transparency and translucency of oils. Acrilyc is used to do mainly ';alla prima'; style of painting, which involves applying the color directly to the canvas. When i use oils i apply many layer during a long process, on the account that it takes a long time to dry and i require a layer to dry in order to apply another. So when i do a painting, i first add an imprimatura which is a preparation to do my drawing on the canvas. Once i do that i add an underpainting which is to set my value key and preparation for coloring, this itself may be a couple of layers. Then i add the colors from dark to light through a series of more layers. In the end for what i do oils looks a lot better then acrilyc. I fell that with acrylic you get a somewhat plastic look to it. I have never seen a really good portrait or figure done in acrylic without lookin a bit rubbery. Skin in translucent, and many other factors influence its look from the lighting to the surrounding objects. This is my main problem with acrylic it is not good for portraiture or for doing the figure.

For the painting you want to do, you could really go either way. That painting is done in oil, and i would do it using the same medium and technique, which is applying the paint directly with quick short brushsrokes. Acrylic would be easier, but acrylic shrinks and becomes completely flat. If you have seen impressionist paintings they have a bit of a texture becaude they applied the painting heavily. Also with oil you will have time to blend the tones and colors to give you a softness, with acrylic you will have a bit of roughness. If you want to do it very similar i would suggest oil, if you simply want to do a faithful reproduction then go with the acrylic. And lastly you cannot mix oil with acrylics, you can apply acrylic let it dry and then apply oil on top of that.Is oil paint and acrylic paint the same? When is it good to use them?
No, you can use them whenever, oil takes alot longer to dry and to clean up after. Acrylics dry pretty fast, so if you need to work and blend I suggest having a spray bottle handy. They clean up with just soap and water. Is oil paint and acrylic paint the same? When is it good to use them?
You should use acrylics when you want to work fast and the image you are looking for may be a little strong. It dries really fast, so it is not suitable for for instance subtle color or light-changes on skin or textile or something. Oil dissolves with turpentine and you can use either very thick or very thin in layers. You can work on it a long time, it dries really slowly. Very suitable for subtle painting like shades, textures, textiles, skin etc. I suggest you try them both and see which one you prefer, it is very individual.
As you know by now acrylic is water based and oil paint is oil based. It is really a matter of what you like. I personally do not like acrylic paint. But the truth is I don't really have alot of experience with it. You have to deside what you prefer. You can use both on the same canvas if you like. I like the feel of oil paint when I'm paniting. I also like that I can mix and blend the paint right on the canvas. I'm glad that it doesn't dry immediately. If you're taking a class and you have a choice whether to work with oil or acrylic, I would recommend oil.
Not at all the same. Acrylic is water based and dries very quickly, while oil paint is of course oil based and dries slowly over several days or weeks depending on conditions. In my humble opionion oil is easier to blend and mix and work with but acrylic has its advantages since it dries so quick.
Acrylic paint is water-based and oil paint is just that, oil. Not enough info, are you an artist or are you painting a house? Oil takes a long time to dry, where acrylic dries almost immediately.
